Tornado Recovery Efforts; November 2019

St. Vincent de Paul in Dayton is at the forefront of the Memorial Day tornadoes relief and recovery efforts. We are grateful and overwhelmed by the partnership and support of the community that assisted us as we responded to the initial stages of the disaster and as we move into long-term recovery efforts.

St. Vincent de Paul fortunately did not sustain any major damage to any of our locations. However, a number of our employees were not as fortunate, and as one of our first orders of business, we provided financial assistance to help them with their most immediate needs. In the days and weeks following the tornadoes, our staff and Vincentian volunteers were present at the Multi-Agency Resource Center and the Family Assistance Center where they provided spiritual support and accompaniment, gas and grocery gift cards, and clothing vouchers to individuals and families impacted by the tornadoes. As we move into long-term recovery, our neighborhood ministries are assisting those impacted by the tornadoes on a case-by-case basis with housing related financial assistance. We also are assisting households affected by the tornadoes with furnishings for their homes.

Additionally, St. Vincent de Paul is the Montgomery County designated drop-off location for the donations of goods. The tremendous outpouring of donated goods at our facilities has necessitated additional expenses by way of over-time hours and other resources.

We are so grateful to you for donating to the disaster relief efforts. You have allowed us to accompany those in need during one of their most challenging trials. Long-term recovery looks different for everyone, but for those who lost everything, it will be a lengthy process. Insurance and government agencies play an important role in recovery, but local nonprofits like St. Vincent de Paul are vital for filling the gaps in support. We are thankful for your generosity.
